Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he posted on a platform, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
