No major competition promotes parity as effectively as the NFL: it's their core marketing message. Yet following ten games in this campaign, this is not a competition that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Instead, it's a scenario where the majority of teams are merely adequate.

NFC Clarity

Within the National Football Conference, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) look like the most well-rounded squads in football, and secured decisive victories on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess a deeply skilled squad throughout football, similar to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3 standing), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense and have been dealing with internal staff conflicts, have shown they can defeat quality opponents. For each of these squads, one can readily construct a Super Bowl path.

AFC Playoff Chaos

Over in the AFC, championship race is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all standing at eight wins) and Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, possess either obvious team deficiencies or are dealing with health issues.

Parity Mechanics

In some ways, it’s the league’s ideal. However, witnessing the current division frontrunners within the conference still feels strange. Areas of each team suggest title potential, yet not completely. Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to total collapse. But the last two weeks have been worrying. He's reverting to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He took seven sacks facing Atlanta in the weekend game, and had a short sequence in which he threw an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he gave away possessions on five occasions versus Pittsburgh.

The Colts’ offense thrived early in the season since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line make the Colts capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, as demonstrated overseas. However, if Jones reverts to his previous error-filled form would end postseason aspirations.

New England Patriots

New England appears fairly alike. Previously, they were a punchline. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team in football following seven consecutive victories. Had it not been for losing due to fumbles a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess a 9-1 record as the league's best. Last season, they were old and slow. Now they’re youthful, quick and confident. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've played against the least challenging lineup throughout football, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has taken sacks 35 times – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he suffered last weekend proved brutal. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

Denver stands at 8–2 as well, yet it seems as if they’re holding their breath. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, Denver cannot intimidate playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering within their division with seven wins, however, health issues affecting their protection unit will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, somehow still leading their division despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles in the evening game. They have a negative point differential, their defense regularly vanishes, and the QB's current constraints at this stage of his career regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and the schedule softening, are on a three-game win streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started losing five of six yet still appear likely to claim the title reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Established Contenders

The Ravens represent a segment within a trio of powerhouses – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, that would continue to generate the most fear in opposing teams if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, but the Chiefs and Bills continue to self-destruct.

Bills Struggles

A week ago, the Bills were riding high post Chiefs triumph. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback this year. They didn't simply fail against Miami; they suffered humiliation, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in over three years.
