Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" category.
Extremely High Pollution Levels
Various sections of the capital registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15-20x exceeding safe limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Recent Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that covers the capital as winter sets in.
However earlier this year, the current city government petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".
Court Decision and Implementation
To the disappointment of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution peaking around late evening to the most severe readings seen during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Effects
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants traveling from across the border following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been documented to spike to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The problem in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
In these regions, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.
Medical and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely fatalities each year in Delhi.
